REV. FR. JOHN GRENNEN, DEFINITOR GENERAL'S VISIT TO
VANCOUVER
Rev. Fr. John Grennen the Definitor General from
Rome visited the Carmelite Community on 26th October
at 3.30 pm with Rev. Fr. Paul Konig from California
Province. Their short visit helped us understand the
mind of Rev. Fr. General regarding our mission in
Canada. He was very appreciative looking at the
rapid progress of this region with a Formation House
and with our 12 priests working in 7 parishes in 5
dioceses and in one major hospital in Canada. Rev.
Fr. Grennen was impressed to know about the
Formation House and the probable two Canadian
vocations to our Carmelite community. As a part of
his pastoral visitation he wrote his report in our
Pastoral Visitation Book. He also visited St.
Edmund’s Church and Fr. Jerald D’Souza explained the
various programs he conducts for people and briefed
him about the ongoing progress of the Secular
Carmelites in Canada. Fr. Boniface D’Souza also
spoke about his unique ministry at St. Paul’s
Hospital which left Fr. Definitor amazed at the
great work he is doing with the sick and old in the
Archdiocese. The Definitor left for Seattle after a
grand dinner at Empire building “CLOUD 9” restaurant
at 49th Floor.

PERFECT
GIFT FOR THE YEAR OF FAITH
The Title of the book: A
SOWER WENT OUT TO SOW, DHYANAVANA PUBLICATIONS,
BANGALORE 2012, pp. xii + 356
Author: Rudolf V. D'Souza OCD
Price: Rs. 200
The title of Father D’Souza’s volume with
homilies for liturgical year C, A Sower Went Out To
Sow, is taken from Jesus’ parable of the sower. His
previous collection of homilies for liturgical year
B, The Mustard Seed, was very well received, as
these thought provoking homilies should likewise be.
With his readable and friendly style and his use of
striking examples, Father D’Souza is like the sower
in Jesus’ parable. He wants the word of God to grow
in his readers’ hearts, striving to overcome the
many different obstacles in their way. Attuned to
the “new methods” of the New Evangelization, the
author engages his audience, so that they will bear
abundant spiritual fruit.

The annual Canada Regional Members’ meeting
The annual Canada Regional Members’ meeting was held
on 12th September 2012 at Harrison Hotsprings Agashi
(British Columbia) an exotic healing spa and springs
that were discovered by the native Indians in the
15th century. Later this became a tourist attraction
for hundreds of thousands in North America. People
flock to this place mainly for holidays and for
healing therapies through the naturally heated
volcanic water flow from the mountain springs:

New Formation House in Canada - "The Little
Flower"
The
inauguration of the Formation House “THE LITTLE
FLOWER” and the first foundation of the Discalced
Carmelites of Karnataka Goa Province “CARMEL HILL”
in Canada was held on 11th September 2012 at
Benedictine Abbey (Mission – British Columbia) at 10
am with a Solemn concelebrated Holy Eucharistic
Celebration by the Most Reverend J. Michael Miller,
CSB, Archbishop of Vancouver along with Rev.
Archibald R. Gonsalves, Provincial Superior and Rev.
Rudolf V. D’Souza OCD the Regional Superior and the
other eleven Discalced Carmelite Friars working in
different Dioceses of Canada. There were 21 priests
present for the celebration with the Secular
Carmelites and the parishioners of Guardian Angels
Church and St. Edmond’s Church North Vancouver.
After the Eucharistic Celebration the blessing of
the Foundation Stone and blessing of the existing
house was ceremoniously done by the Archbishop. A
short felicitation program was arranged. Fr. Rudolf
welcomed all and thanked each and every one for
making this event a grand success. Rev. Archibald R.
Gonsalves thanked the Archbishop for his enthusiasm
in welcoming the Carmelites and granting them the
permission to open this first Foundation house in
Canada in his Archdiocese. The Archbishop in his
address thanked the Carmelites and hoped that their
presence would boost the spiritual life of people in
his diocese through their prayer and contemplative
spirit. He also thanked all the Carmelites including
the Secular Carmelites for their valuable
contribution to the Diocesan spiritual and pastoral
life. The program ended with a sumptuous buffet
arranged by the Critics’ Choice Caterers.

Welcome
to Rev. Fr. Alfredo Pereira to Carmelite Community
in Canada
On 2nd August at 6.30 pm we warmly welcomed Rev. Fr.
Alfredo Pereira to Carmelite Community at St.
Edmund's Parish. Rev. Fr. Alfredo Pereira hails from
Goa and is a Canadian Citizen now. He worked in
Calgary Diocese and was promoted to Carmelite Way of
life by Rev. Fr. John Alex Pinto. He will live with
the Carmelites and will decide to join the Novitiate
within a few months from now. We also celebrated
52nd Birthday of Fr. Rudolf V. D'Souza on this
occasion. Both these celebrations were deliciously
enhanced by Fr. Jerry's mouthwatering dishes that
made us enjoy the occasion thoroughly. Fr. Boniface
D'Souza added flavour with his broad and non stop
beautiful smiles.

ABOUT
US
Since
2003 two of our Friars Fr. Jerald D’Souza and Fr. Mario
Fernandes have been working in Vancouver Diocese, catering
to the Secular Carmelites at various levels of their
formation. Our fathers made remarkable progress in
preaching, teaching and taking care of the Secular
Carmelites from the parishes they were assigned to working
as assistant pastors. In 2006 they began working in parishes
at Down Town Vancouver. Fr. Jerald was assigned as the
Administrator at Guardian Angels parish and Fr. Mario was
appointed chaplain to St. Paul’s Hospital (Vancouver City).
Later seeing the need of more priests in Vancouver Diocese
Fr. John Alex Pinto joined them and then Fr. Gabriel was
sent to assist Fr. Jerald at Guardian
Angels Parish. Consequently, Fr. Jerome Mascarehnas came to
join hands with this expanding community.

HISTORY
A Short Historical Background:
When we obtained invitation from Calgary Diocese to
establish another community there; Fr. Ranjan D’sa was moved
from New York after his studies to take care of the pastoral
needs in Vancouver as Frs. John Alex Pinto and Gabriel Dias
had to move to Calgary. Rev. Fr. Provincial obtained
official permission from Fr. General to adopt British
Columbia and Calgary as parts of the mission of Karnataka
Goa Province during the last General Chapter at Fatima. With
this in mind Fr. Provincial suggested Fr. Rudolf V. D’Souza
to be the Regional Superior and administrator at Guardian
Angels parish as Fr. Jerald would move to St. Edmund’s
Parish. This was the wish of Archbishop Michael Miller to
offer us another parish at his Archdiocese. read
